About The Greatwood Candle Company

I have always loved fragrance, as a little girl in my gran’s garden I loved to mix rose petals in water, decant the liquid into jam jars and pretend I had made the most amazing scent! As I grew older I loved perfumes, loving nothing more than at airports trying out the multitude of scents on offer. Candles also became an obsession, although I quickly came to realise that not all candles are created equal. Some smell lovely in the container, but have no scent throw when lit, some are the opposite and fill your room with gorgeous aroma when hot. Some burn unevenly, some leave black soot marks on the glass. I filled my homes with candles and drove my husband mad with the amount I bought!

I became a wife and mother of one daughter, we settled in East Sussex, living in a beautiful Oast House. In 2017 I was approaching a landmark birthday and my daughter was in her last year at primary school. I decided that I needed to try something different, so I ordered my first “make your own candles kit”. Very quickly I became obsessed with how difficult it was to make that perfect candle. I learnt about wax tunnelling, mushrooming, hot scent throw, cold scent throw, wicks. That was all before I got down to my favourite bit –The Fragrance! I spent some time with a perfumer learning how to blend fragrance notes and quickly decided that if I was going to stand out from the crowd, I needed to make my own fragrances. This though just added to the complexity of the process.

It took a year of testing waxes, wicks and fragrances but from those beginnings The Greatwood Candle Co. has been developed. All our candles are hand poured in our Oast Houe Kitchen, and the scents have all been inspired by the coast, countryside and history around us in East Sussex. We now use a mix of Coconut Oil and Rapeseed Oil wax in our candles as it is completely free from paraffin, soy, palm, beeswax and synthetic additives

Our fragrances are a mixture of essential oils and fragrance oils. All our essential oils are sourced from a UK supplier whose ethics are their No.1 priority, they are 100% pure and  not tested on animals.

I hope you love your candle as much as I do!
